Kansas FFA members and their instructors have a unique opportunity to connect agriculture, food systems and student leadership through locally grown ingredients and hands-on learning. Participants will learn about sorghum’s nutritional benefits, its role in Kansas agriculture and the many ways students can explore the crop through classroom instruction, entrepreneurship, food science, marketing and consumer outreach. The session will highlight how sorghum can be incorporated into school cafeterias in multiple forms — from whole grain and flour to popped sorghum — while creating opportunities for students to lead educational initiatives, conduct research projects and build connections between producers, schools and local communities.
